![]() However, as practical as Day Dress is, it provides nowhere near the visual spectacle as a piper dressed smartly in No.1 Full Highland Dress. Indeed, the No.1 Full Highland Dress was worn by virtually all Scottish pipers and pipe bands until the 1980s when the Strathclyde Police Pipe Band adopted “Day Dress” as their bagpiper uniform due to the No.1 dress being so heavy, impractical, and not to mention very expensive to purchase and maintain. ![]() ![]() “No.1s” were then adopted first by the Govan Police, and when pipe bands took off in the early 20th century, by numerous other police, colliery and civilian pipe bands. If Clarke blows qualification from here it will be a bummer, but you just know with Scotland that games against the likes of Georgia could prove problematic for us.The piper’s “No.1 Full Highland Dress” was originally worn by pipers of the historic Highland regiments. ![]() Scotland played well, never looked like losing, and could have scored a couple more, although Gunn made some big saves as well. Spain were very physical all night yet complained when Scotland were just as physical as them, they also had a propensity to dive after minimal contact and spent a good part of the game in the refs ear moaning. I watched at home in Spain with Spanish commentary, and there was an element of wtf about them, how can we lose to this team? The aftermath of the game is that the new coach already has the look of a Dead Man Walking. To have Gavi, Williams Jr, Aspas and Carvajal eg at your disposal, and not start them just smacks of arrogance. Their manager has a reputation for making changes for changes sake, and last night it bit him on the arse. Last night though, credit where credit is due, it was a deserved win against a Spain team who simply thought they could turn up and roll over us. My thoughts on the Scottish National team are the same as many on here, I'd rather they won than lost, but I don't get stressed out about their results. I’ve only ever been to one Scotland game and that was corporate hospitality through work and even then I only went as I was hoping to get lucky with one of the other attendees (narrators voice: “he didn’t”)Ĭouldn't have put this better. My old man never took much truck with Scotland even when we qualified for stuff and that attitude kind of rubbed off on me. Until then, I'm just gonna enjoy a decent bunch of players, who all seem pretty sound, doing much better than any Scotland team I can remember. I'll continue to move in cycles with the national team and if they're ever top-loaded with huns in the team again I'm sure my interest will disappear. I'm not gonna be buying myself a kilt and pair of timbies anytime soon, and I still find the Tartan Army to be pretty cringe, but it's probably just as cringe to be so self-depreciating to the point a Scottish person can't enjoy a result like last night. To them, Robertson, KT and McTominay etc are superstars who play in the bright lights of the EPL. I watched the game last night with my two boys and I enjoyed their enthusiasm for the team and the players. However, I find this squad of players to be pretty likeable and I can tolerate Clarke far more than previous managers. ![]() In fact, when McLeish was re-appointed I remember whenever I watched the team I would be actively willing them to get beat. Maybe it's because I'm so emotionally and financially invested in Celtic that its impossible to carry that over into international football or maybe there's just always been something niggling at me with the general blazers and masonry of the Scotland set-up, which used to manifest itself into the actual side. Pretty sure two of those games were freebies through the school in the 90s against Italy and Holland (so it was ideal getting to see the likes of Baresi, Baggio, Rijkaard etc) and the last game I went to was in 1999. I'm 40 and can probably count on one hand the amount of Scotland games I've been to. 8:08 AM - Mar 29I've always been fairly detached from international football. ![]()
